The Washington State Jobs with Justice coalition delivered its "Grinch of the Year" award Friday to Waste Connections, the California-based waste disposal company involved in a three-month strike through its three Fife-based garbage companies.
Traditionally, "Grinch of the Year" candidates are nominated for doing the most harm to working families in the community, the coalition said.
Earlier this month, it looked as if both sides of the strike - Waste Connections officials and about 55 Murrey's, D.M. and American disposal workers - were close to ending the impasse. But Waste Connections officials refused to consider their "best and final offer" from negotiations in October.
The companies, which serve about 60,000 customers from Gig Harbor to Bonney Lake, are using replacement staff. No new talks have been scheduled, said Rick Payne, secretary treasurer of Teamsters Local 313.
