LANDFILL: DON'T RISK WATER SUPPLY
Tacoma Mayor Brian Ebersole, Pierce County Executive Doug Sutherland and Lakewood Mayor Bill Harrison say the landfill near Graham is "a cost issue" (TNT, 4-30).
Let's assume we were talking about the Green River watershed here. How would they feel about a 168-acre landfill there? Would they feel assured with "state-of-the-art technology to prevent leaks" if their drinking water were concerned? Nobody wants to pay more to get rid of their garbage, but I also have to pay more and am willing to do that when it comes to doing it more responsibly. I don't want to risk contaminating anybody's water supply.
One more thing: Mankind will never be able to "create a wetland." Maybe something that resembles one somewhat, but you have to give Mother Nature credit for that one. And as far as enhancing the wetland: Yeah, right.
I am not for landfills - anywhere. I would like to see incinerator plants. Fire kills infections, diseases and the like, and as far as emissions, they are scrubbed, whereby harmful products are removed before the exhaust reaches the atmosphere. And years from now we don't have a mountain of garbage where once upon a time there was a valley, with trees and wildlife and a little stream running through it.
